Beginning in 1952 with 10 talented women, the Creative Arts League of Sacramento continues today with the tradition of promoting contemporary California art & fine craft through a half century of sponsorship of over 21 Biennial Exhibitions at the Crocker Art Museum. League members plan, design, fund and assist installation of these exhibits in collaboration with the museum and other local venues including most recently the Pence Gallery in Davis.
In 1993 Creative Arts League of Sacramento established the Creative Arts League Endowment Fund (CALS Endowment Fund) with the Crocker Art Museum Foundation in order to continue their mission. And recently CALS established and funded the Creative Arts League Education Endowment Fund at the museum honoring Lois and David Warren (CALS Lois and David Warren Fund). We now focus our endowment fund raising efforts on two events, the Crocker Holiday Art & Craft Festival and CALS Tours (tours to exceptional art exhibitions and venues in Northern California).
CALS supported the Crocker Art Museum capital expansion project that tripled the size of the original facility. Of particular interest to CALS was the addition of approximately 4000 square feet in new permanent galleries dedicated to ceramics and craft media including clay, textiles, glass, wood and metal.
Most recently, CALS was instrumental in bringing to the Crocker, The Vase and Beyond: The Sidney Swidler Collection of the Contemporary Vessel and partially underwriting the accompanying catalog. In 2011 CALS funded the catalog that accompanied the exhibition, Clayton Bailey’s Wonderful World of Wonders, a major undertaking featuring more than 180 sculptures, vessels and ephemera created during the past fifty years by Clayton Bailey, an influential sculptor in clay and a leading figure in the artistic movement called Funk.
CALS contributes to the, I Can Do That!, a non-profit corporation providing high- quality arts education opportunities through Teaching-Artist Residencies to children of all abilities in Sacramento.
