Cartier & America at the Legion of Honor: covers the history of the House of Cartier from its first great successes as the “king of jewelers and jeweler to kings” during the Belle Époque through to the 1960s and 1970s, when Cartier supplied celebrities of the day with their jewels and luxury accessories. Derived mainly from the private Cartier Collection housed in Geneva, the spectacular array of more than 300 objects includes jewelry of the Gilded Age and Art Deco periods, as well as freestanding works of art such as the famous Mystery Clocks. With an extensive variety of jewelry forms—ranging from traditional white diamond suites to the highly colored exotic creations of the 1920s and 1930s—Cartier made its mark with the ingenuity of its designs and its exquisite craftsmanship.

Amish Abstractions at the de Young Museum: This exhibition features approximately 48 full-size and crib quilts dating from the 1880s to the 1940s. Quilts made by girls and women of various Amish communities in Pennsylvania and the Midwest are visual distillations of their way of life. The Amish faith embodies the principles of simplicity, humility, discipline, and community, but their quilts are anything but humble. Using a rich color palette and bold patterns, these quilts are truly a unique contribution to American textile history. The quilts highlight the beauty and complexity of the abstract patterns.

Opened to the public in 1976 as a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Filoli features a 36,000 sq.ft. home and a 16 acre English Renaissance garden. Filoli is recognized as one of the finest remaining country estates of the early 20th century. The gardens are spectacular! Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University boasts a proud and venerable history, as it was conceived of in tandem with the founding of Stanford University itself. The Stanford family, including Leland Jr., traveled the world collecting objects of art and cultural interest. The museum was originally created to make this collection available to students and the public. It has withstood natural disasters and periodic neglect, only to be resurrected, renewed and expanded, with its collections stronger than ever, thanks to the passionate dedication of Stanford faculty and staff, the Cantor Family and art lovers in the surrounding community. You will see one of the most complete collections of art of August Rodin on earth as well as many other beautiful examples of art from all ages. This is an exceptional museum.

This exhibition begins with paintings by naturalist artists such as Bougereau and Courbet and presents American expatriate James McNeil Whistler’s Arrangement in Gray and Black, known to many as “Whistler’s Mother.” Early work by Manet, Monet, Renoir and Sisley are on view as well as a selection of Degas’ paintings that depict images of the ballet, the racetrack and life in “la Belle Époque.” The Conservatory of Flowers features four permanent galleries, each of which is painstakingly cared for by Nursery Specialists. Plants are rotated into the galleries as they bloom so visitors can always expect to see the plants in the collection at their peak.
Cornerstone Gardens at Sonoma &

The Hess Art & Wine Collection in Napa

Cornerstone Gardens is situated along the main gateway between Sonoma Valley and Napa Valley. The Gardens at Cornerstone Sonoma are a series of walk-through gardens showcasing new and innovative designs from the world’s finest landscape architects and designers. When commissioned, these artists were given the freedom to create anything from traditional gardens to modern, conceptual installations. Each designer was provided a garden parcel of approximately 1,800 square feet, a few practical considerations and infinite opportunity. In addition to world-renowned gardens, Cornerstone Sonoma offers guests a chance to indulge in the best of wine country living. Explore unique retail shops and galleries, sample and purchase “only here” local wines, and discover seasonal culinary delights and locally produced specialty foods to eat in or take away. The Hess Collection: Donald Hess began collecting art in 1966. Today, The Hess Collection houses less than a quarter of a collection that is shown in museums worldwide. Hess’ collecting style is a personal endeavor driven by a passion rather that monitory investment or current trends. He develops a close dialogue with an artist to better understand what drives him or her to create and he carefully limits his focus as a collector to twenty living artists whose work he faithfully supports long term. As is evident by the caliber of the collection, he collects with the uncanny ability to acquire works by lesser known artists who often go on to become well known and respected in their disciplines.

Birdie Boyles Art Exhibition at Kondos Gallery
Sacramento City College
October 27 – November 21, 2008

Birdie Boyles (1916-2008), a native Sacramentan, graduated from Stanford University and during World War II worked on the front lines for the American Red Cross, for which service she was awarded the Bronze Star.

After the war, she returned to Sacramento and worked as a research consultant for the State Department of Education. At this time she also began creating woodblock prints and became a leading member of the Sacramento arts community. She was a founding member of the Artist Cooperative Gallery (later named the Artists Contemporary Gallery), showed her artwork often at the California State Fair and the Crocker Art Museum, and was an early member of Creative Arts League of Sacramento.

It is with great enthusiasm that CAL took on the challenge of organizing an exhibition of her artwork, and underwriting a catalogue that will be a permanent record of her accomplishments. In its more than 50 year history, Creative Arts League has presented exhibitions that would not otherwise be seen in Sacramento. In the early days, that meant finding venues for exhibitions of local artists work. In the late 1950s, the group began a long relationship with Crocker Art Museum, organizing and underwriting contemporary craft exhibitions. We see this exhibition and catalogue of the artwork of Birdie Boyles continuing in the tradition of exhibiting work that might otherwise be overlooked.

Our partner in this endeavor has been the Art Department of Sacramento City College and in particular Chris Daubert, art instructor and Director of the school’s Gregory Kondos Gallery. In addition to opening up the Gallery for this exhibition, Chris also agreed to curate the show and assist in the publication of the catalogue. We could not have presented this exhibition without his help.

We would like to thank Birdie’s nieces, Christine Boyles David and Kay Sprinkel Grace, who have collected information about Birdie’s extraordinary life, and made available her archives. Thanks too to Patty Gregory, Pat Johnson and Charlene Noyes who documented the work that Birdie did for the Sacramento Archives and Museum Collection Center (SAMCC). And this project could not have undertaken without the assistance of CAL members Lois and David Warren.

Creative Arts League would also like to thank Melza and Ted Barr and other generous donors whose contributions have made this exhibition possible. Those contributions also underwrote the publication of this catalogue – a document that will ensure that the artwork of Birdie Boyles will not be forgotten.

Our event was an amazing success and it is entirely due to the year-long planning and tireless efforts of the Festival Committee from the Creative Arts League, Pat Snooks, Diane Boal, Lesli Pletcher, Connie Spickelmier, Suzan Goodban, Susan Willoughby, Alice Smith and Santa, Wilma Champlin and from the Crocker Art Museum, Julie Smith and Pat Smith and the incredibly competent, generous and always cheerful volunteers! The total number of volunteer hours (just on the three days of the actual event) came to an incredible 620 hours!!! If you are interested in being an Artist/Exhibitor or Volunteering at the 2009 Festival let us know!

The 2007 festival was moved to the Scottish Rite Center due to the expansion construction at the Crocker Art Museum where the event usually takes place. Starting the day after Thanksgiving and going through that weekend - it was a huge success with close to 6,000 people in attendance over the 3-day event.

Over 85 fine craft artists displayed and sold their work. All types of work were represented from fine jewelry, ceramics, metalworking, woodworking, textiles, sculpture and glass to gourmet food products, hand made memory books. We also partnered with the Gold Rush Grille to provide terrific food and drink for the event. CALS’ special Victorian Santa was in attendance and happily posed for pictures with children large and small!
