CALS Tour #1: Saturday March 6, 2010
Cartier & America at the Legion of Honor &
Amish Abstractions at the de Young Museum
Cartier & America at the Legion of Honor: covers the history of the House of Cartier from its first great successes as the “king of jewelers and jeweler to kings” during the Belle Époque through to the 1960s and 1970s, when Cartier supplied celebrities of the day with their jewels and luxury accessories. Derived mainly from the private Cartier Collection housed in Geneva, the spectacular array of more than 300 objects includes jewelry of the Gilded Age and Art Deco periods, as well as freestanding works of art such as the famous Mystery Clocks. With an extensive variety of jewelry forms—ranging from traditional white diamond suites to the highly colored exotic creations of the 1920s and 1930s—Cartier made its mark with the ingenuity of its designs and its exquisite craftsmanship.
Amish Abstractions at the de Young Museum: This exhibition features approximately 48 full-size and crib quilts dating from the 1880s to the 1940s. Quilts made by girls and women of various Amish communities in Pennsylvania and the Midwest are visual distillations of their way of life. The Amish faith embodies the principles of simplicity, humility, discipline, and community, but their quilts are anything but humble. Using a rich color palette and bold patterns, these quilts are truly a unique contribution to American textile history. The quilts highlight the beauty and complexity of the abstract patterns.
However, if you haven’t seen the King Tut Exhibition choose this tour instead! It is a little more expensive but it’s on the same day, same bus and a little more fun!

In the summer of 2009 the de Young presents Tutankhamen and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs, a glorious exhibition of over 130 outstanding works from the days of the Pharaohs. This exhibition includes many new and exciting elements not seen in previous versions of the exhibition, including a revised version of the catalogue, a new audio tour, and additional artifacts from Tutankhamen’s tomb.

Birth of Impressionism:
Masterpieces From the Musee D’Orsay
at the de Young Museum in San Francisco &
The Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco
Birth of Impressionism: This exhibition puts forth nearly 100 works by the famous masters who called France their home during the mid-19th century and from whose midst arose one of the most original and recognizable of all artistic styles, Impressionism. This exhibition begins with paintings by naturalist artists such as Bougereau and Courbet and presents American expatriate James McNeil Whistler’s Arrangement in Gray and Black, known to many as “Whistler’s Mother.” Early work by Manet, Monet, Renoir and Sisley are on view as well as a selection of Degas’ paintings that depict images of the ballet, the racetrack and life in “la Belle Époque.” The Conservatory of Flowers features four permanent galleries, each of which is painstakingly cared for by Nursery Specialists. Plants are rotated into the galleries as they bloom so visitors can always expect to see the plants in the collection at their peak. Whether you are a native San Franciscan, a visitor from the other side of the world, or a budding botanist The Conservatory of Flowers offers an up-close experience with rare and endangered plants unlike any other.
The trip price is $74 for CALS members, and Friends of CALS. It is $79 for non-members.

CALS Tour #4: Thursday August 12, 2010
Cornerstone Gardens at Sonoma &
The Hess Art & Wine Collection in Napa
Cornerstone Gardens is situated along the main gateway between Sonoma Valley and Napa Valley. The Gardens at Cornerstone Sonoma are a series of walk-through gardens showcasing new and innovative designs from the world’s finest landscape architects and designers. When commissioned, these artists were given the freedom to create anything from traditional gardens to modern, conceptual installations. Each designer was provided a garden parcel of approximately 1,800 square feet, a few practical considerations and infinite opportunity. In addition to world-renowned gardens, Cornerstone Sonoma offers guests a chance to indulge in the best of wine country living. Explore unique retail shops and galleries, sample and purchase “only here” local wines, and discover seasonal culinary delights and locally produced specialty foods to eat in or take away. The Hess Collection: Donald Hess began collecting art in 1966. Today, The Hess Collection houses less than a quarter of a collection that is shown in museums worldwide. Hess’ collecting style is a personal endeavor driven by a passion rather that monitory investment or current trends. He develops a close dialogue with an artist to better understand what drives him or her to create and he carefully limits his focus as a collector to twenty living artists whose work he faithfully supports long term. As is evident by the caliber of the collection, he collects with the uncanny ability to acquire works by lesser known artists who often go on to become well known and respected in their disciplines.
The trip price is $76 for CALS members, and Friends of CALS. It is $81 for non-members.
THIS ART & WINE LOVER’S TOUR INCLUDES: Specially prepared information on the Cornerstone Gardens and the Hess Art Collection, your transportation, all entrance fees to the Cornerstone Gardens & the Hess Art Collection, bottled water, juice & a pastry treat to enjoy on the way to the Napa Valley.
